The Language of Whisky, Reimagined in Scent
How SPÈ Atelier Translates Whisky into Natural Fragrance
At SPÈ Atelier, we believe that scent is an interior language — one that quietly shapes how we feel, remember, and experience a place.
Nowhere is this language more complex, or more evocative, than in whisky.
Before whisky is tasted, it is understood through scent.
From Glass to Atmosphere: Why Aroma Comes First
In traditional whisky tasting, the ritual begins with sight — the colour held to the light — but it is aroma that defines the experience.
Long before the first sip, the nose begins to interpret what is to come.
Scientific research shows that up to 80% of what we perceive as taste is driven by smell.
This is because while our taste buds detect only five sensations — sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami — our sense of smell can distinguish extraordinary complexity.
This is why whisky is first nosed, not tasted.
And why scent becomes the gateway to flavour.
Translating Whisky into Natural Scent
Creating a whisky candle is not about replication — it is about interpretation. Creating a candle which perfectly compliments the whisky experience and whisky memory.
There is no “whisky essential oil" or "alcahol essential oil". Because we work with only 100% natural essential oils we try to recreate the aromatic structure of whisky itself.
Through years of refinement, we’ve identified the natural scent equivalents of whisky’s key notes:
- Warm woods → cedarwood, sandalwood
- Soft smoke → cade, birch tar
- Sweet depth → vanilla, tonka, benzoin
- Spice → clove, cinnamon, cardamom
- Brightness → citrus peel, orchard fruits
Each candle becomes a composition — not of alcohol, but of nature’s own aromatic materials.
The SPÈ Whisky Scent Wheel
To guide this process, we created the SPÈ Whisky Scent Wheel — a tool designed specifically for candle-making.
Inspired by traditional whisky aroma wheels, it translates whisky tasting notes into natural fragrance families and their corrolating essential oil. All of which are pulled from SPÈ Ateliers Botanical and Essential Oil Library.
- Woody — cedarwood, amber, sandalwood
- Peaty / Smoky — cade wood, birch tar
- Fruity — citrus, orchard fruits
- Floral — jasmine, rose, lavender
- Spicy — clove, nutmeg, cardamom
-
Cereal / Sweet — biscuit, honey, almond
This allows each candle to be built in the same way a whisky is experienced — through layered scent.
The Perfumer’s Pyramid Meets the Whisky Glass
Just like fine fragrance, whisky unfolds in layers.
In our candle-making process, we follow the Perfumer’s Pyramid:
- Top Notes — the first impression (fresh, citrus, light florals)
- Heart Notes — the character (herbal, floral, green)
- Base Notes — the depth (woods, spice, smoke)
This structure mirrors whisky tasting exactly:
- Light notes appear first
- Then complexity develops
- Finally, depth and warmth remain
In our workshops, guests use this approach to create a scent that feels balanced, intentional, and entirely personal .
Rooted in Speyside
Our whisky candles began not as a concept, but as a place.
Based in Speyside, we are surrounded by distilleries — Cardhu, Tamdhu, Knockando, The Macallan — where the air itself often carries the scent of malted barley drifting through the glen .
This landscape — its woods, its warmth, its quiet complexity — became the foundation of our Whisky & Smoke Collection.

Crafting a Candle Like a Whisky
When creating a whisky-inspired candle, the process becomes deeply personal.
You might ask:
- Do I prefer bright, citrus-led whiskies?
- Or something warmer — woody, smoky, and rich?
- Perhaps a balance — fruit with a soft spice finish
Using the scent wheel and guided blending techniques, each candle becomes a reflection of individual taste.
Not just how whisky tastes —
but how it feels.
A Ritual of Scent and Stillness
Whisky is shaped by time, material, and environment.
So is scent.
Both unfold slowly.
Both are layered.
Both invite attention.
At SPÈ Atelier, whisky candle-making is not just a product —
it is a quiet ritual.
A way to bring the atmosphere of Speyside into everyday life.
Experience It in Person
For those who wish to explore this connection more deeply, we host intimate candle-making workshops at SPÈ Atelier in Logie Steading.
Each experience pairs scent creation with a guided whisky tasting — allowing guests to move between fragrance and flavour in one continuous journey.
