A little story about Juniper Gin.

The story of juniper is one of the Highlands and more specifically a story about Scotland and the Dutch. Illustrated by the common root word for gin and juniper - the word “gin” is a shortened form of the Dutch word “jenever”, which means “juniper”.

In the nineteenth century, when Highland juniper bushes were more prolific. People gathered berries by the bagful and took them to markets in Inverness and Aberdeen. They were then exported to the Dutch gin distillers

Junipers story is not limited to gin. Juniper’s use in whisky and the use of its wood’s smoke are drawn together neatly in the tales of illicit Highland whisky stills. These stills were hidden away in the glens and juniper wood was a favourite as fuel. The near absence of smoke from juniper wood helped makers avoid attracting the suspicions of the local excise man.

SPÈ Juniper Gin scent profile fuses these stories with the peppery & spicy aroma of crushed black juniper berries and bitter citrus peel. Sparkling black pepper and herbaceous thyme, softened with soft floral tone of rose petals.
